Cultural deficit and Cultural difference

I believe that the Fox News video displays an example of cultural deficit. The students shown in the video were unable to speak standard English correctly because they were lacking the skills to do so. Those children had grown up in an area in which speaking incorrectly was readily accepted. This is caused by the fact that not only are the children exposed to this incorrect grammar, but have no one to correct them. As one boy stated, he didn't have anyone to tell him the correct words to use. This is due to the fact that the adults in these areas are also lacking knowledge of how to speak properly. It is this lack of skills that causes the cultural deficit.

The Code-Switching video is an example of cultural difference. This video demonstrates how language can change depending on the situation. Anytime that two people from the same culture communicate, they are likely to do so in a way that comes natural to that culture. This may not be in what is considered “Standard English” but rather in that cultures slang or dialect. The people in this video demonstrate that they have the capacity to speak properly in professional settings therefore they are not lacking a understanding of the language. Their use of variations of the English language is by their own choice instead of using these incorrect forms by default due to a deficit in their abilities.
